Car Tax

What is Car Tax?

Car Tax is simply a tax for motorists. Any car that you drive in the UK must clearly display a valid car tax disc. The amount of car tax that you pay each year is linked to the age of the car and the type of car that you drive.

If you buy a new car, it's common place for the dealer to arrange a first tax disc on your behalf (note that you still pay for it). If you buy an older car, you need to check whether there is any remaining time left on the current disc on the car or whether you need to purchase a new disc for the year ahead.

Whether you purchase a new tax disc or inherit an existing tax disc from a bought vehicle, you are normally sent a Form V11 reminder by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) when your tax disc is due to expire. This reminder encloses a payment form in order for you to purchase your new car tax.

To purchase a new or replacement car tax disc, you can either apply online, by phone or by taking your completed payment form to the Post Office for processing. In order to receive your new disc, you must be in possession of a valid insurance certificate or cover note and have a valid MOT certificate if the car is more than three years old.

Although the colour of car tax discs change every year, here is a typical car tax disc for 2007:

How Much Does It Cost?

The price of car tax depends on several factors. Cars registered before 1 March 2001 are taxed depending on engine size. Cars registered after 1 March 2001 are taxed depending on Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions.

If your car was first registered before 1 March 2001, you will need to pay £120.00 tax per year for a car with an engine size of 1549cc (1.6L) or less, or £185.00 per year for a car with an engine size greater than 1549cc.

If your car was first registered on or after 1 March 2001, the car tax that you will need to pay is as follows:
