Driving Test

When you have passed the theory test, you should be able to concentrate on putting all of the rules you've
learned into practice, in preparation for your driving test.

If you've had sufficient driving lessons and plenty of practice, you should be able to carry out all of the driving test manouvres and instructions confidently and proficiently.

The driving test lasts for about one hour and, during this time, an examiner will access your knowledge of driving and your ability to manouvre a vehicle. The driving test includes / covers the following:

  • eyesight test
  • safety questions
  • safety precautions
  • controls
  • moving away
  • emergency stop
  • reverse to the left or right
  • turn in the road
  • reverse parking
  • use of mirrors
  • signalling
  • response to signs and signals
  • use of speed
  • following distance
  • maintaining progress
  • junctions
  • judgement
  • positioning
  • clearance to obstructions
  • pedestrian crossings
  • position for normal stops
  • awareness and planning
  • ancillary controls

On the day of your driving test, you must make sure that you take your appointment card, driving licence, theory pass certificate and, if you don't have a photographic driving licence, some photographic id, such as a passport.

Before the driving test, the examiner will ask you to sign a form. Your signature will be checked against that on your driving licence.

Before you get into the car, the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from another vehicle. The other vehicle will be approximately 20m away. The examiner will then ask a series of 'show me - tell me' questions. Once these have been answered, you will be instructed to get into the car for the main part of the driving test.

During the first few minutes of the driving test, the examiner should give you a few minutes to settle your nerves. Once you are instructed to move away when ready, try to put everything you've learned into practice.

When you return to the driving test centre, your examiner will complete a Driving Test Report Form. As long as there are no serious or dangerous faults, or more than 15 driver (minor) faults, you should pass the driving test.

Once you have passed your driving test, send off for your full licence as soon as possible.
